What Is a Golden Comet?
The Golden Comet is a hybrid laying hen, not a heritage breed. It's the result of crossing a Rhode Island Red rooster with a White Leghorn hen, producing a bird that combines the hardiness and temperament of the Rhode Island Red with the exceptional egg production of the Leghorn. The result is one of the most productive, easy-to-manage laying hens available to backyard flock owners.
Golden Comets are also sex-linked at hatch — meaning males and females are different colors from day one, which is why hatcheries can guarantee you're getting pullets (females) rather than a mixed batch.
Egg Production
This is where Golden Comets shine. You can expect:
- 250–320 eggs per year in peak production — that's 5–6 eggs per hen per week
- Large to extra-large brown eggs with consistent shell quality
- Early onset of laying — typically 16–18 weeks, earlier than most heritage breeds
- Strong first and second year production before gradually tapering
If consistent egg production is your primary goal, few breeds match the Golden Comet at this price point.
Temperament
Golden Comets are known for being calm, friendly, and easy to handle — especially compared to more flighty breeds like Leghorns. They tend to:
