Your First Egg: What to Expect in the First 6 Weeks
You've picked up your pullets and set them up in their new coop. Now you're waiting. When will that first egg arrive? Here's what to expect week by week.
Week 1: Settling In
Keep hens confined to the coop for 2–3 days so they learn it's home. Minimize handling. Fresh feed and water always available. No eggs yet — this is normal.
Week 2: Finding Their Rhythm
Hens should be eating well and exploring the run. Watch for normal droppings, active foraging, and all birds roosting at night.
Weeks 3–4: Pre-Lay Signs
- Squatting when you approach — laying is days away
- Bright red comb and wattles — hormones ramping up
- Nesting box interest — rearranging bedding, sitting in boxes
- The egg song — loud vocalizing before and after laying
Weeks 5–6: The First Eggs
Expect small eggs, occasional soft shells, and an irregular schedule at first. All normal — production stabilizes within a few weeks. Make sure oyster shell is available free-choice.
