Golden Comet Pullets: Care Guide & FAQ

What is a Golden Comet?

Golden Comets are a hybrid sex-link breed known for their exceptional egg production, calm temperament, and early maturity. They're one of the best choices for backyard flocks — friendly, hardy, and reliable layers.

When will my pullets start laying?

Golden Comets typically begin laying between 16–20 weeks of age. Ready-to-lay pullets from Stafford Hill Farms are already at or near point-of-lay, so you can expect eggs within a few weeks of arrival.

How many eggs do Golden Comets lay?

Expect 250–300 large brown eggs per year under good conditions — that's roughly 5–6 eggs per hen per week.

What do I feed my pullets?

Feed a quality layer pellet or crumble (16–18% protein) once they begin laying. Before laying, use a grower feed. Always provide fresh, clean water and free-choice oyster shell for calcium.

How much space do they need?

Plan for at least 4 sq ft per bird inside the coop and 8–10 sq ft in an outdoor run. Golden Comets are active foragers and do well with free-range access when possible.

Are Golden Comets good for beginners?

Absolutely. They're docile, easy to handle, and one of the most forgiving breeds for first-time flock owners.

How do I introduce new pullets to an existing flock?

Use a "see but don't touch" method — keep new birds separated but visible for 1–2 weeks before full integration. This reduces pecking order stress significantly.

What vaccinations or health precautions should I take?

Our pullets are raised with care, but we recommend consulting your local agricultural extension office for region-specific vaccination recommendations (Marek's disease is common). Keep the coop clean and dry to prevent respiratory issues.

How long do Golden Comets live?

Typically 5–8 years, though peak egg production is in years 1–3.

Can I mix Golden Comets with other breeds?

Yes — they're generally peaceful and integrate well with most docile breeds like Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons (which we also carry!).
